Obituary and Memorial of the Late Avrial Redfern

Avrial was born on the 8th of May 1946. The daughter of Doreen and James Wynn and sister of Moira, she grew up in Milton in Stoke. She was a keen athlete for most of her life, she enjoyed sport at Milton school, in Stoke, where she was also head girl and was Ladies Captain of Stoke Athletics Club. The Highlights being the West Midlands 400meters champion and also representing England in a triangular competition between England, Wales and Northern Ireland as part of the winning 4 x 100 relay team.

At 16, Avrial attended the College of Commerce, where she acquired excellent secretarial skills. She put this to good use throughout all her years of employment. From her first job taking shorthand notes in a Magistrates Court, to being the PA to the head of Sports Education for Staffordshire, at Hanley Town Hall. Later moving on to the newsroom at Radio Stoke, as a secretary.

Avrial met Allen, who would become her future Husband, on the dance floor of the famous Crystal Ballroom in Newcastle under Lyme.  After their wedding, in March 1968, Avrial and Allan lived in Biddulph before moving into a house on Park Lane in Congleton, where they happily resided until five years ago.  They were happily married for 54 years.

The couple became proud parents to their daughter, Nikki, and later in life were delighted to become grandparents to Sam and Sophie. After Nikki’s birth, Avrial qualified as a swimming instructor, working at Biddulph and Congleton swimming baths, teaching children from five years upwards to swim.

Avrial’s innate sense of adventure was always present and even stretched to joining Allan on various fishing trips.  Wherever she went, her capacity to forge new friendships was clearly evident. Avrial and Allan travelled extensively, in both the UK and abroad, cruising, visiting every capital city in Europe and venturing further afield to destinations such as Singapore and New Zealand. Avrial loved to have fun and had a great sense of mischief. She had a heart of gold, was funny, witty, cheeky, loyal, thoughtful and caring. Avrial loved her family first and foremost.

She led a happy life and even when receiving her diagnosis, she remained grateful, positive and chose to live her last days calmly, peacefully and surrounded by those she loved and cared for most. Avrial fought with courage and determination but sadly passed away peacefully on Sunday the 18th December 2022 at Cheshire East Hospice, surrounded by her loving family and friends, aged 76.

Avrial’s funeral was held at Birches Crematorium at 12noon on Wednesday 11th January 2023 and was officiated by Civil Celebrant Lindis Pattison-Tadman.  The celebration of Avrial’s life was very well attended showing how popular and respected she was.

Avrial was brought into the chapel accompanied by “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” by Eva Cassidy. Lindis offered a welcome to the attending mourners before reading the poem The Heritage. Lindis read Aviral’s eulogy and she was remembered with love with messages from family & friends and included Tributes from Nikki, John and Pat. There was then a moment of reflection with a visual tribute as “Fields of Gold” by Eva Cassidy was played. Lindis offered words of farewell which was followed by a reading ‘The Train of Life’ which was read by Avrial’s Granddaughter, Sophie. There was a final moment for reflection as ‘Time to Say Goodbye’ by Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman played. Following the committal and Lindis’ closing words the congregation left the chapel listening to “Simply the Best” by Tina Turner followed by “The Train of Life” by Susan Boyle.  The attending mourners were then invited to continue the celebration of Avrial’s life at The Three Greyhounds.

Donations in memory of Avrial were collected and gratefully received for East Cheshire Hospice and Myositis Uk.

FAQs & Advice

We’re always happy to talk to you if you have any questions or queries regarding our services, but you may find the answers you need among our Frequently Asked Questions. If you still need help, please call our friendly team at any time.

We answer our phone 24 hours a day, no matter what we are doing. We would rather you call us at 3am and then get a good night’s sleep, rather than waiting until 10am and being up all night worrying about something. We’re here to support you, no matter what time it is.
No. You don’t need to wait for the doctor, death certificate, registrar or the coroner before making arrangements. We’re experienced and we’re professional in our approach to how we arrange funerals. We work to realistic timelines to ensure that a funeral can be completed in a timely manner. This is usually within two weeks of someone passing away. If we waited for death certificates before we began making the arrangements, this would probably extend to over three weeks.
We can offer a direct cremation service, like you may have seen on TV with the likes of Pure and Simplicita, for £1200 (inclusive of all fees). We can offer a simple attended funeral, again fully inclusive of all fees (doctors, cremation, celebrant fees), for £2600. For a traditional funeral service that may include things like flowers, an order of service, newspaper notices, a limousine etc, you should expect a total cost of approximately £3500 to £4000.
