Obituary and Memorial of the Late Gordon Burdekin

The funeral of the late Gordon Burdekin took place at St Mary’s, Roman Catholic Church, on Friday 2nd June 2023.

Gordon John Burdekin was born on the 25th March 1953 at Aspland Maternity home to Dorothy and Gilbert Burdekin.  He was named after a famous jockey of the day Sir Gordon Richards.  He was soon followed by three sisters, Hazel, Valerie and Pamela.

As a child Gordon attended Leigh Street infant and juniors, and for a brief time to Flowery Field junior School, then onto Hyde Grammar school.

He had a love of the theatre.  He was chosen for a part in their production of Strife and got rave reviews. Soon he was doing the sound system and lighting for other school productions.

After leaving school Gordon started work at the Nat west Bank on King Street Manchester from where he was transferred to the Bredbury and then the Glossop branch.  This was where he was introduced Anne. Three months later Gordon and Anne were married, with Gordon becoming Stepdad to Peter and Suzanne.  It wasn’t long after this that Gordon and his new family moved to Congleton, where Gordon worked at Natwest for 27 years, including the Holmes Chapel and Sandbach branches until his redundancy.  He then went to work for East Cheshire Council, and Riverside in Congleton. Finally working alongside Anne at Martins News agents until his retirement.

Gordon had a lot of interests and in his youth he ran a mobile disco playing at weddings and many events throughout Tameside.  He was involved in Lighting and Sound at local theatres for many years. He loved the theatre but he also loved photography and spending time in his garden, growing his own plants and pottering around with Anne.

Gordon was one of the kindest people and would do anything for anyone. He recently joined Communicare and got immense pleasure from taking people to their hospital appointments.

Gordon dearly loved his family, he and Anne spent 37 happy years together, making wonderful memories. He was so thrilled when Peter and Isabelle had Antione, and just couldn’t wait to make the trip to Reunion Island for his grandsons christening.

Gordon passed away peacefully surrounded by love on 16th May 2023, Aged 70 years.

The funeral was held at St Mary’s, Roman Catholic Church, at 11am on Friday 2nd June 2023 and was followed by committal at Birches Crematorium, Northwich.  The service was conducted by The Reverend Father Bill Kilkenny.

He then read from the first letter of St Paul to the Corinthians, chapter 13 ‘ love never ends’ and the Responsorial Psalm 23 ‘The lord is my shepherd’.  Next the Gospel Reading according to John, 14: 1-6 was given and read by his sister Valarie.  Father Bill then read a tribute to the life of Gordon before his sister Hazel read the Eulogy. Father Bill then offered prayers of Intercession.  This was followed by the Offertory Hymn ‘Abide with me’ In accordance with Roman Catholic Funeral rights and Requiem Mass, Father bill offered the Eucharistic Prayer and Holy Communion.  The Communion Hymn was ‘Make me channel of your peace’  He then gave the final commendation and farewell to Gordon, as the congregation moved to Birches Crematorium for the final committal of John Body.  As the coffin was carried from the church, the Hymn ‘All things bright and beautiful’ was sung.

FAQs & Advice

We’re always happy to talk to you if you have any questions or queries regarding our services, but you may find the answers you need among our Frequently Asked Questions. If you still need help, please call our friendly team at any time.

We answer our phone 24 hours a day, no matter what we are doing. We would rather you call us at 3am and then get a good night’s sleep, rather than waiting until 10am and being up all night worrying about something. We’re here to support you, no matter what time it is.
No. You don’t need to wait for the doctor, death certificate, registrar or the coroner before making arrangements. We’re experienced and we’re professional in our approach to how we arrange funerals. We work to realistic timelines to ensure that a funeral can be completed in a timely manner. This is usually within two weeks of someone passing away. If we waited for death certificates before we began making the arrangements, this would probably extend to over three weeks.
We can offer a direct cremation service, like you may have seen on TV with the likes of Pure and Simplicita, for £1200 (inclusive of all fees). We can offer a simple attended funeral, again fully inclusive of all fees (doctors, cremation, celebrant fees), for £2600. For a traditional funeral service that may include things like flowers, an order of service, newspaper notices, a limousine etc, you should expect a total cost of approximately £3500 to £4000.
