Obituary and Memorial of the Late John Harris

John passed away peacefully on Monday 17th January 2022 at Macclesfield Hospital. Aged 72.

A well loved man in the town of Congleton, John was a cherished husband to Sheila; devoted and supportive father to Becca; wonderful father-in-law to Suzy; loving brother to Ros, Ann & Sharon; dear brother-in-law to Phil, Paul, Dave, Malc & Caroline; much loved uncle to Emma, Matt & Oli and dear friend to many.

John will be lovingly remembered for his love to laugh and warm personality, he will be sadly missed by everyone who knew him.

The funeral was held at Birches Crematorium, Northwich, at 12pm on Friday 4th February 2022.

John was born on the 25th of June 1949 in Macclesfield Hospital. Sadly his father Joseph died before he was born and so it fell to his mother Vera to give him the best start in life. When John was 7 his mum remarried. His step Father was a wonderful role model, and soon he became a big brother to Roz, Ann and finally Sharon.

John attended St Stephens School and on to the Senior Boys school in Congleton. Upon leaving went to work for AJ Passes as an apprentice joiner, and after a short spell at Berisfords he then went to ERF where he worked for 36 years, before being made redundant. He then moved over to ISS at Astrazeneca at Alderley Park, until early retirement and due to his health.

John had a part time job at The Premier cinema at evenings and it was here where John met Sheila. They married 8 years later on the 5th August 1972 at St James Church.  The couple lived in Broadhurst Lane for 20 years until they moved to Ruskin Road.

In 1983 John’s life changed forever and Rebecca or Becca as he called her, was born. He fell in love all over again and was the best dad. They would go off on adventures, down to the river looking for old glass bottles, and taught her how to fix cars, fish and cycle, something he loved growing up. He took Becca swimming on a Sunday. When Suzie came into Becca’s life John welcomed her with open arms, they went on a lovely family holiday to Keswick and he was so proud of them both when they got married, both Suzie’s dad Eric and John signed their certificate as witnesses.

John and Sheila had been together for over 50 years. Sheila treated John for their silver wedding in style sending him to Silverstone to watch the F1 – John loved the British teams and drivers like Nigel Mansel and Damon Hill.

John took early retirement from work due to the diagnosis of Parkinson’s. He later developed Parkinson’s dementia but stayed at home with help from Sheila, Becca and Suzie and Care Connect who helped out on a daily basis.

Last year Sheila had a fall and John was taken into respite care, a situation that his family found very difficult. John was taken into hospital on new year’s day. They told the family he wouldn’t survive the hour but John proved them wrong and stayed for another 2 weeks. He died on January the 17th 2022.

John was taken into the chapel accompanied by “To Where You Are” by Josh Groban. Alongside a coffin Spray of beautiful bright flowers, his coffin was adorned with a flag representing the Jordan Grand Prix team which John had waved during his 1997 visit to the British Grand Prix.

Civil Celebrant, Kate Moran offered words of welcome before a Tribute to John was read by his Nephew Mathew Tweats.  Kate then read the Eulogy to John.  Following this a video tribute was shown accompanied by Cavatina, played by the Shadows.   The Poem “As I look Back” was then read out on behalf of John’s Daughter, Mrs Rebecca Harris-Tomkinson.  Kate then led the mourners in the Lord’s Prayer and read the words of Committal.  The congregation of mourners were then invited to file past John’s Coffin and exit the chapel as “Unchained Melody” by the Righteous Brothers played.

FAQs & Advice

We’re always happy to talk to you if you have any questions or queries regarding our services, but you may find the answers you need among our Frequently Asked Questions. If you still need help, please call our friendly team at any time.

We answer our phone 24 hours a day, no matter what we are doing. We would rather you call us at 3am and then get a good night’s sleep, rather than waiting until 10am and being up all night worrying about something. We’re here to support you, no matter what time it is.
No. You don’t need to wait for the doctor, death certificate, registrar or the coroner before making arrangements. We’re experienced and we’re professional in our approach to how we arrange funerals. We work to realistic timelines to ensure that a funeral can be completed in a timely manner. This is usually within two weeks of someone passing away. If we waited for death certificates before we began making the arrangements, this would probably extend to over three weeks.
We can offer a direct cremation service, like you may have seen on TV with the likes of Pure and Simplicita, for £1200 (inclusive of all fees). We can offer a simple attended funeral, again fully inclusive of all fees (doctors, cremation, celebrant fees), for £2600. For a traditional funeral service that may include things like flowers, an order of service, newspaper notices, a limousine etc, you should expect a total cost of approximately £3500 to £4000.
